Teach and volunteer with underprivileged children in Goa


Organisation activities in brief:

This organisation focuses on educating and empowering underprivileged children to build positive and sustainable futures. It runs two informal schools supporting a total of 45 local Indian children.

The organisation strives to initiate social change by encouraging genuine relationships between privileged and underprivileged groups. Through its program, many deprived children are gaining self esteem and confidence. This in turn enables their inborn talents and capabilities to unfold.

Project location: Bardez, North Goa

Date project commenced: Commenced in February 2008 and is ongoing

 Project highlights:

-       Working closely and contributing to the education of underprivileged children

-       Contributing to the sustainability of a local communities in India

-       Contributing to the belief that every child has a right to childhood and to a dream

-       Sharing of skills, talents and cultural exchange

 Language preference of volunteers: English and Hindi

 Main duties for volunteers:

-       Teaching the afternoon session to children from 2-5pm. These lessons can be a range of subjects depending on volunteer interests and skills. Lesson examples include painting, handicrafts, drama, sports etc.

 

-       Volunteers can also choose to volunteer for full days and assist in curriculum based morning sessions such as maths and English

 

-       Friday sessions are held on the beach where children can play, learn water skills and interact with tourists. This also increases awareness of the organisation and its schools

-       In addition, volunteers can choose to be involved in other organisation activities such as event organising, research, fundraising and communication

 

Attributes/Qualities required:

-       Strong commitment level required

-       Ability to interact with the children in a caring and nurturing way

-       Ability to plan and deliver own lessons (teaching qualification not required)

-       Proactive: the organisation is open to new ideas and suggestions

-       Motivated

-       Creative

-       Volunteers will need to supply their own materials or equipment  for lessons as the organisation has limited resources

 

Volunteer duration: Short to long term placements depending on volunteer availabilities

Age Range: Open age range


Accommodation details (if available): No accommodation is provided by the organisation however, there are many accommodation options in Goa catering to a range of budgets.

 Meal details (if available): Volunteers are to provide their own meals

 Transport details (if available): Own transport required- scooter hire is widely available in Goa
