Volunteer in India with Street Children (Delhi)
Organisation activities in brief: Established in 2003, this organisation aims to rehabilitate children living and working on the streets of Delhi. It comprises of a residence home for boys, a day care centre for boys and girls, an outreach service and an awareness program.
The organisations objectives include:
-To provide a healthy residential program to children without a safe home or family
-To encourage and support reconciliation with families wherever possible
-To connect street children and the larger population through volunteerism
-Build staff and volunteer capacity to understand and address issues concerning street children
-Create an environment where street children are respected as individuals working for their livelihood
Name of project requiring volunteers: Volunteer with street children for informal education, games and life skills training
Project locations: Lado Sarai and Jama Masjid (Old Delhi)
Project Duration: Ongoing
Project highlights: Working directly with street children and being involved in creating a brighter and more sustainable future for them.
Language preference of volunteers: English and Hindi (not required)
Experience required (If any): Previous teaching, child care work or creative knowledge advantageous but not required.
Main duties for volunteers: The organisation is open to new ideas and volunteer work is based around individual skills, talents and interests. It can include but is not limited to the following:
-Teaching creative or sports lessons such as painting, handicrafts, drama, soccer etc. Activities in these areas offer children alternative ways of expressing themselves and are of great value to the organisation.
-Teaching informal or creative skills such as teamwork, sharing, hygiene, self awareness, and creative thinking. The organisation encourages lessons to be fun, engaging, and interactive.
-Playing games that reinforce school learning and knowledge.
-Assist in homework completion or formal education such as English, maths, reading and writing.
-Assist in teaching vocational or life skills to older children in preparation for entering the work force.
-Spending time with the children in a nurturing way. For example, conduct beauty or manicure sessions with the girls.
-Volunteers can also be involved in other organisation activities such as: event organising, research, fundraising and awareness and communication
Volunteers can be located at the organisations residence centre, day centre or working with children on the streets through the outreach service.
Attributes/Qualities required:
-Ability to interact with children
-Open minded, motivated and pro-active
-Able to deliver own lessons and provide own materials such as art supplies if necessary
-Flexibility and willingness to be involved in a variety of activities if the volunteer has several skills
Volunteer duration: One week to one year as per volunteer availability
Age Range: 20 years or older
